peanut butter chocolate "puppy chow"

I did not become familiar with "puppy chow" (or "muddy buddies") as a sweet snack concept until far too late in life. It is incredibly delicious, highly addictive, and reminds me of a dessert version of Chex Mix. This recipe features all the most delicious dessert ingredients (in my opinion): chocolate, peanut butter, powdered sugar. The recipe is quick and easy, and the final product is perfect to serve to large groups or as a gift to friends.

  • Chex cereal (or another variety of wheat waffle cereal; 5 cups)

  • Roasted and salted peanuts (2 cups)

  • Chocolate chips (2 cups)

  • Peanut butter (1/2 cup)

  • Butter (4 tablespoons)

  • Powdered sugar (1 and 1/2 cups)

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the Chex cereal and peanuts.

  2. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter. Heat on low and stir continuously until the ingredients are melted and smoothly combined.

  3. Add the chocolate mixture to the dry ingredients and quickly blend with a spatula.

  4. Add the powdered sugar in two parts, mixing between each addition to ensure the cereal is evenly coated. The cereal should appear lightly white and powdery and not wet or gooey; add more powdered sugar as needed until this point.

  5. Spread the mixture out on baking sheets to let cool and set. Store in airtight containers.
